A Remake of the Karate Kid. Please Say It Isn't So.

On Sunday I was looking for something to watch on the treadmill when I came upon a marathon of The Karate Kid . Now this was a movie I loved when I was younger. It originally came out in my yearly teen years. Oh the memories of Ralf Macchio. Not to mention who didn't love Mr. Miyagi played by Par Morita. "Wax on. Wax off." I think that has to be the most famous line from the movie.

I truly enjoyed watching it again. It was great. I love watching Daniel stick up for himself against the bullies with the use of karate which was taught to him to use only in defense. Truly one of the great movies of the 80's. So when I saw a commercial for a remake of the movie I was not pleased. They are going to have a young kid move to China and get picked on and taught karate by Jackie Chan. Now to this I have to say. Why can't they just leave it alone? I don't want a remake. The original is a classic and kids today can watch it and still get the meaning of it. My daughter caught some of it and she sat herself right down and really enjoyed it.

I just find it so frustrating. Is there no originality left out there? I would much rather see an original movie as opposed to a remake. I almost never like remakes. Seriously what are they going to remake next Gone With the Wind or The Wizard of Oz. They better not even think about it.

I don't think they can do a remake of Wizard of Oz, nor Hone with the Wind. They did some kind of Tv thing for Wizard of OZ, it's the Tinman, but..nothing comes close to the original.

The Karate Kid remake will probably not as good as the original, but..oh well..Have you seen the Next Karate Kid, starring Hilary Swank, with Mister Miyagi as well.. it was a good one too

You know, I thought that too... until I saw a couple trailers for the new version... I think it might work, the trailers are really good.

Won't that be a bit confused since Jackie Chan in China would be best teaching Kung Fu (or Wushu or Tai Chi...) and not Karate, but if this is the case, they shouldn't call it "Karate Kid", lol

Here, here! I totally agree, I hate remakes. They ruin a good thing!

I am generally against remakes, because once a movie is made, why make it again? On the other hand, there are some great remakes, such as The Jackal (the old one is slow and a bit boring), but there are bad ones, such as Psycho (no one can outperform Hitchcock). I know Kurt Russell is angry that they're remaking Escape from New York. I guess it's ok only if the younger audience is introduced to a movie that they otherwise wouldn't know existed. Then they can go back and compare it with the original. Examples: The day the Earth stood still, 3:10 to Yuma, the Departed.

I'm also reading about this on another blog and am about to checkout the trailer. This is heartbreaking! The Karate Kid is like... sacred!

My own little karate kid will love the original or a new remake. I must find the original for her to watch over March Break.

I just saw this movie a few weeks ago. Loved it. But I wouldn't watch a remake of it.

I can see them doing a remake of the Wizard of Oz... probably with Johnny Depp and I would watch it LOL. He is amazing. But it will never ever replace the original, that was just pure magic.

A remake of KK sounds goofy, but as it includes Jackie Chan, at least you know the martial arts will be legitimate.

BTW - look at Danielsan's neck in that Karate Kid poster.... where's his body? He's like an ostrich!

I prefer "Karate Kid" original than the remake one. It have a good story and original soundtrack (Glory of Love by Peter Cetera).

I'm with you. My teenaged son was thrilled to catch this movie on tv a couple of weeks ago and begged me to watch it with him again. When he told me about the remake, I made a face. Jackie Chan? I just can't see anybody doing that role justice but Pat Morita!
