I Can't Do Anything Right!

Every morning I do my 13 year old's hair. She has beautiful long brown hair. Everyday it's the same. She wants it in a pony tail. Well today I said how about wearing it down for a change. She seemed willing to do it and picked out a pretty barrette. When I was finished I thought she looked so pretty and grown up.

However, she went to the mirror and said she thought she looked horrible. I told her that wasn't the case, but if she wanted me to put it in a pony tail I had plenty of time to do that. She sat there and was on the verge of tears for about 15 minutes telling me she just didn't know what to do.

Now it was time to go. My husband was down the stairs and it was getting late. They had to leave to go to school. Now she decided to burst into tears. I couldn't believe it. My husband had no time for it and I felt horrible. I told her I would do a pony tail really quick. She couldn't even look at me. She grabbed her coat and got in the car. I feel horrible. Seriously how dare I try to make her look nice for school. I should have just done the pony tail. Now I have to worry about her all day. Honestly, she looked beautiful. I just hope someone tells her she looks nice. It will take some of the edge off. Bottom line. I can't do anything right.

I'm sorry you had a rough start to the day. I'm sure she looked beautiful and everyone will probably love her hair at school today.

The one day I let my daughter wear her long gorgeous ringlets down and out of a ponytail, she got into trouble in class for playing with it all day. Needless to say we won't be doing that again!

awwww! That sounds terrible! I doubt there's anything that you did to actually cause it tho - and nothing you could have done to fix it. Just one of those things we have to go thru on our own. ((hugs)) I hope she got lots of compliments at school! Doing hair in a variety of ways can be so fun! She'll understand someday that you weren't trying to ruin her life, don't worry! ((hugs)) (love your site! found you thru adgitize)

I go through this with my daughter on a regular basis. Girls are a lot more sensitive than boys and they have a hard time adopting a new look. Let her do her hair herself and then she will do it the way she wants, you won't feel so guilty and she will be taking a little more responsibility for herself.

I'm really sorry about that and know exactly how you feel...

I looked over my teenage sister for a few years until she was old enough to move out, have a 13 year old niece who is in the teenage funk and a 6 going on 16 year old who all have/had similar meltdowns about things like this and the indifference always seemed to follow my best efforts do something nice, fun, cool or something else to be helpful. Don't worry, (speaking from my experience with my teenage sister) it only lasts another 5-6 years and then your free. LOL!!! In the meantime, don't beat yourself up because you were trying to do the right thing and help your daughter. Important to remember... DO NOT take anything personal during the next couple of years. I'm sure there is a lot that you do really well...for example care about your daughters and that makes you an AWESOME mom in my book. Sorry for the thesis length comment...I just know how you feel!
