Chastity Class for My Middle Schooler

Last night I attended an informational meeting for a course my daughter will have next week in school. She's in seventh grade and attends a Catholic school so every year at this time they teach a Chastity course to the seventh graders. She is so mad. She doesn't want to go. She's afraid that the boys will make snide comments. I wasn't sure about it either than I went to the meeting.

I'm glad they had an informational meeting though it was sad to see that there were only a handful of parents there. Granted I'm sure some of them couldn't make it, but I think most couldn't be bothered and to be fair I didn't want to go either. Well I was glad I did so I know what's going to happen. They are going to basically have the kids split up into groups. Same sex only groups I might add so they'll all be comfortable. This made me feel better as this is my daughters biggest concern. They really aren't going to be talking about sex either. They are going to be mentioning it, but basically teaching them to have respect for their bodies and for others. They will teach about the importance of love and what sex is really all about. They will mention some of the other issues such as pornography and sexting. I think it's important for the kids to learn what the real meaning of sex is and that it's really making love and should be a special act between two people in love and married.

I don't know how much she'll get out of it. The woman who is running it really seemed to know what she was talking about and can get on the kids level with them.

It's such great news to hear and learn about this especially in this today's twisted society where sex is always promoted even to children. I hope there will be "informed" educators such as them who are not only teaching the abstinence of sex in kids, but also imparting the meaning of such knowledge and why it really matters. Sex is great but I believe that sex should always be confined in the realm of marriage.

It's good to teach young girls self-respect at this age although I would not call the class a chastity class. It just seems so old-fashioned. I think girls at this age need to develop self-esteem and feel beautiful for who they are.

Sounds like a class all schools need to teach. But I agree - they need to change the name of it.

It's good that the school has this program. In my highschool (I attended an all-girl Catholic school) we had something like this in Health class. It's not really sex education because nuns are not for contraception and all that, but the teached did try to talk about understanding your body.

For some reason, when I read this post, the words of Billy Joel's song, "Only the Good Die Young" came to mind:

Come out Virginia, don't let me wait
You Catholic girls start much too late
But sooner or later it comes down to fate
I might as well be the one

I'm sure that what they are going to try to teach the kids will be good, but it seems like calling it "Chastity Class" sets things off on the wrong foot which will make parents and kids have reservations.

I think Mom To The Power of Three nails it however. Kids, not just girls, at that age need to learn self-esteem. Unfortunately, our society sends the wrong message about self-esteem. Kids are told they have to be thin, have the right body shape and be dating to have self-esteem. Helping kids feel good about themselves and appreciate and respect their own bodies without having get involved in things they shouldn't seems to me to be a better way of teaching chastity, as well is discouraging drug or alcohol abuse, and many other dangerous youth activities.

My two cents.

I agree that they should change the name. I'll send them a little note on that. I think that what makes the kids all weird about it. I do think it will be a good thing though. I'll let everyone know how it goes.
